All investigations are in some way affected by the presence or influence of a client – the individual, company or community that will benefit from the result of the investigation. The purpose of this section of the manual is to identify the action to take in respect of all clients, and to identify the types of client that will be seen by the investigator.
Clients defined
The term ‘client’ is not restricted to those who seek the product (the customer). In investigation, and particularly in the public sector, there are many ‘internal’ clients to whom investigators owe a duty of professionalism.
Customers are deserving of professional client service, of course, but so are the internal clients - colleagues, employees, supervisors, managers and directors, lawyers and the courts.
Recognise the need for, and the capabilities of, those internal clients who support investigators, and make every reasonable effort to be as professional towards them as towards any paying client.
